maternity dressing guide

I recently did a shopping service for a mama-to-be client and these are my biggest considerations for maternity style.

my hope for all my clients is always to buy things that they are going to be able to wear/rewear for years, but pregnancy and postpartum are definitely one of those seasons where you have very specific fit/function needs which make shopping for the long term seem difficult (if not impossible).

these are a few ways I approach dressing the bump that help to eliminate adding those one-time wear pieces to your wardrobe during pregnancy.

work with what you’ve got

take stock of your current wardrobe to see what will likely work with your changing body and what might not.

you likely already have great pieces in your wardrobe that will work throughout your pregnancy and beyond:

+ sundresses/slip dresses + skirts
+ button down shirts
+ oversized tees + sweaters

focus on non-maternity items when buying new pieces

here are a couple of non-maternity pieces I added to my wardrobe while I was pregnant that I wore for at least the first year postpartum:

+ maternity/nursing bras (fave for sleep, fave for pumping, fave for day-to-day, fave tank)
+ jeans in a couple sizes up from your regular size (borrow your husbands or scoop some at the thrift!)
+ lululemon align leggings in a size up from your regular size
+ gap modern tees in a size up from your regular size
+ dresses with smocking at the bust

swap/borrow

one of my girlfriends who is currently pregnant has a bin of maternity clothes that her girlfriends add to/pass around to whoever is pregnant in their friend group and I thought this was genius!

think sisterhood of the travelling (maternity) pants!

and if you’re still struggling to dress your bump, book a styling service and let me help!
